Widespread homophobia hampers prevention efforts at all levels, including individuals denying their risk of infection due to internalized stigma and in the broader culture where anti-gay messages and the lack of support for sensitive and honest HIV prevention messages and programs are the norm. Such barriers have been linked to less successful coping mechanisms (Arend, 2003).

Hear from the Grantees

In late October 2007, program staff from the five grantee organizations traveled to Washington, DC for a one-day symposium on strategies to combat HIV/AIDS-related stigma in the United States. Staff members from each organization were asked to discuss the following topics:

  • How their organizations are working to eliminate HIV/AIDS-related stigma and discrimination in the U.S.;
  • Unique challenges related to HIV/AIDS stigma and discrimination faced by the communities they serve;
  • Key factors that foster HIV/AIDS-related stigma nationally and in the communities they serve; and
  • How stigma fosters the spread of HIV/AIDS.

To listen to their responses, please click on the organization name listed under "In This Section" in the right-hand column.

Additionally, staff members from each organization gave a presentation on their organization and its anti-stigma project. Click on the organization's name below to view a video of each presentation or click on their PowerPoint to view the slides.
